Part of Cranston is home to Pawtuxet Village, one of New England's oldest settlements, founded around 1638 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The village straddles Cranston and Warwick along the Pawtuxet River, and it's where colonists burned the British schooner Gaspee in 1772, an event still celebrated locally every June as Gaspee Days.
