Get a Free EstimateA door that does not hang properly, seal tightly, or swing smoothly is a constant frustration. Toensing Construction takes care to fit each door correctly, whether that means adjusting a jamb, planing down a sticking door, or replacing a full unit with proper shimming and weatherstripping.
We install both interior and exterior doors across Rhode Island homes, including pre-hung units, custom doors for older homes with non-standard openings, and period-appropriate entry doors for historic properties.
Interior or exterior, standard or custom, Toensing Construction handles the full range of door work across Rhode Island homes.
Replace a failing or dated entry door with a new unit that is energy-efficient, properly weatherstripped, and fitted with the right trim to complement your home's exterior style.
Installing interior doors correctly takes more skill than it looks. We hang doors plumb and level with even reveals, smooth operation, and proper latch alignment every time.
Double-door installations require precise alignment between both leaves. Toensing Construction handles the rough opening, jamb, and trim work for French doors, patio doors, and double entries.
Pocket door rough-in and hardware installation, or surface-mounted barn door track systems. Both options are useful for saving swing clearance in tighter spaces.
Older Rhode Island homes often have non-standard opening sizes. We can fit custom-ordered or site-modified doors into openings that pre-hung standard units will not fit properly.
New doors deserve good trim. Toensing Construction installs door casings, backband profiles, and plinth blocks that make each opening look finished and architecturally intentional.

How It Works
A door that fits, seals, and operates correctly requires precise carpentry. We handle the full installation from rough opening assessment through finished trim on both sides.
We assess the existing opening, check for level and plumb, and measure accurately for the new door unit. On older homes we often find openings that have shifted over time and need adjustment before a new door will operate correctly.
We help you select the right door for the application, including material, style, glass options, and hardware. For historic homes we can source period-appropriate options. For exterior doors we factor in energy performance and weather resistance.
The door is set plumb, level, and properly shimmed, then secured and weatherstripped for exterior applications. Interior and exterior casing is installed and finished to match your existing trim. Hardware is fitted and adjusted for smooth, reliable operation.
We test the door for smooth operation, proper latch and lock engagement, and tight weatherseal on exterior doors before finishing up. You should not have to adjust anything after we leave.
Common Questions
It depends on the condition of the existing frame. If the frame is square, plumb, and in good condition, replacing just the door slab is often possible and more cost-effective. If the frame is damaged, out of level, or you are changing the door size, a full unit replacement including the frame makes more sense. We assess this during the estimate.
Yes. We install all types of doors including interior passage doors, closet doors, pocket doors, exterior entry doors, storm doors, and slider doors. Each type has different installation requirements and we are experienced with all of them.
In many cases yes. Historic door styles, panel configurations, and casing profiles can often be sourced from millwork suppliers. When a true match is not available off the shelf, we can work with custom millwork suppliers to replicate the original details.
Out-of-square openings are common in older Rhode Island homes where settling and seasonal movement have shifted the framing over time. We correct the rough opening before installing the new door so it operates correctly and the trim fits cleanly. Shimming and blocking are part of every installation we do.
