Client Story
We recently had Toensing Construction build a custom built-in for our entryway, and we're beyond thrilled with how it turned out. From start to finish, the process was smooth, professional, and truly collaborative. One of the things that impressed us most was the attention to detail. To make sure the new built-in matched our existing woodwork, he went above and beyond, mixing multiple stains until he achieved the perfect color match. That level of care and precision really sets his work apart. The design was exactly what we needed, he added functional hooks, storage, and beautiful finishing touches that make the space both practical and visually stunning. It feels like it was always meant to be there. Even better, the project was very reasonably priced, while the quality of craftsmanship was outstanding, and it's clear that diligence and hard work that went into every part of the project. If you're looking for custom carpentry done right, we highly recommend Toensing Construction. We're already thinking about what to hire him for next!

How It Works
A custom built-in should look like it was always part of your home. That takes careful measurement, thoughtful design, and precision installation. Here is how we approach every built-in project.
We visit your home to understand the space, discuss what you want the built-in to do, and take note of existing trim profiles, wood species, and finishes that the new piece needs to match or complement.
We work through the design with you, including dimensions, configuration, shelf spacing, door and drawer options, and any special features like integrated lighting or hidden storage. You see the plan before anything is built.
The built-in is constructed and finished to match your home. Color matching is one of our specialties. We mix and test stains until the new piece integrates seamlessly with the woodwork that already exists in your home.
We install the built-in with precision, scribing to walls and ceilings as needed so there are no gaps and the piece looks like it was built in place. Final trim and hardware complete the installation.
We walk through the completed piece together and confirm everything looks and functions exactly as planned before closing out the project.
Common Questions
Yes, and it is one of the things we take most seriously. We mix and test stains on site until we achieve a match that integrates seamlessly with your existing trim, floors, or cabinetry. A built-in that does not match the surrounding woodwork is noticeable. One that does feels like it was always there.
We build a wide range of custom built-ins including entryway and mudroom units with hooks, benches, and cubbies, living room bookcases and entertainment centers, home office built-ins, window seats with storage, and kitchen pantry cabinetry. If you can describe what you need it to do, we can design and build it.
Most built-in projects take 2 to 4 weeks from final design approval through installation, depending on size and complexity. Larger multi-piece installations or projects requiring custom millwork may take longer. We give you a realistic timeline at the start.
We use cabinet-grade plywood for the structural carcass and solid wood for face frames, doors, drawer fronts, and trim details. This is the industry standard for quality custom cabinetry and built-ins. It provides dimensional stability while allowing the visible surfaces to be finished in solid wood.
